An autoimmune disorder is a condition in which the immune system of the body accidentally attacks and destroys healthy body tissue. Autoimmune diseases come in more than 80 different varieties.
The body’s immune system uses blood cells to defend against harmful substances like toxins, cancer cells, bacteria, viruses, and blood and tissue from outside the body. These substances produce antigens. The immune system can eliminate these harmful substances because it produces antibodies against these antigens.
Your immune system cannot distinguish between healthy tissue and potentially harmful antigens when you have an autoimmune disorder. Consequently, the body initiates a reaction that causes normal tissues to be destroyed.
