Pertussis, also called whooping cough, is a highly contagious, acute respiratory tract infection caused by the gram-negative bacterium Bardetella pertussis. It is of concern because rates of infection continue to increase. Pertusis spreads easily from person to person, mainly through droplets produced by coughing or sneezing.
